Join us for a panel discussion exploring the 'model minority' stereotypes affecting Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in America.
Vice Mayor Dan Wu, State Representative Nima Kulkarni, University of Kentucky professor Dr. Akiko Takenaka, and University of Kentucky History history student Grace Yi will speak on their experiences with the 'model minority.' The panel will be moderated by former ABC 36 News Anchor, Erika Bivens. Q&A session to follow panel.
Coined by sociologist William Peterson in the January 1966 edition of The New York Times Magazine, "model minority" originally described the apparent socioeconomic success of Japanese Americans in spite of social marginalization. Over the years, the term has grown to include all Asian American and Pacific Islanders, particularly East Asians (Japanese, Chinese, and Korean Americans) as well as South Asian Americans (namely Indian Americans). The harm of the "model minority" label is masked behind seemingly positive stereotypes intended to compliment, such as attributing intelligence and/or success to genetics, cultural values, and family structures. These stereotypes not only suggest there are "good" and "bad" kinds of Americans (as well as "problem minorities"), but flattens the diverse experiences of Asian Americans into an incredibly narrow narrative.
This panel aims to create a space in which we discuss and help dismantle the harmful effects of "model minority" stereotypes in our own communities.
