The mission of the Kentucky Women's History Alliance is to promote women’s history and advance the goals of education, empowerment, equality, and inclusion.
The Alliance works to:
Recognize, honor, and celebrate the cultural, ethnic, racial, and professional contributions of women throughout U.S. history through research, documentation, exhibits, outreach, and community events.
Increase public awareness and appreciation of women’s history by partnering with schools, faith communities, civic organizations, and other community groups.
Encourage participation in women’s history initiatives across all 120 Kentucky counties.
Pursue additional goals and projects that support the Alliance’s mission and are adopted by its members.
The Kentucky Women's History Alliance was originally organized as the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Celebration and Chorus (Frankfort Initiative). Its founding purpose was to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which expanded voting rights for women. Today, the Alliance continues to support and promote the broader goals of the National Women's History Alliance.
One of the Alliance's first projects was the Suffrage Chorus, which performed songs sung by suffragists during their long campaign for voting rights. Under the leadership of founders Sylvia and Don Coffee, that project grew into the historical program you will experience on October 1, 2026.
Through music and storytelling, the program shares the history of the 72-year struggle for women's suffrage in the United States. Audiences will hear songs associated with the movement and learn about the determination, challenges, and achievements of those who fought to secure the right to vote. Their story is one of perseverance, civic engagement, and ultimately, historic change.
