A Book Club of Kentucky Crime
Marion Miley looked like the all-American girl: tall and athletic, with bronzed skin, a chestnut-brown bob and a big smile.
“Here is a girl with that something!” one newspaper writer exclaimed.
She was the “most photographed golfer in the world,” a reporter for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram declared in May 1940, at the opening of the city’s Southern tournament, which Miley won in 1938 and ‘39.
By 1940, the young star had won almost every tournament a woman could win, except the one she desperately wanted: the U.S. Women’s Amateur.
However, Marion Miley would never be national champ. Or live to age 28.
For December, the Blue Grass True Crime Club is reading and discussing The Murder of Marion Miley by Beverly Bell, a historical fiction based on the murder of one of Lexington's most promising athletes of the mid-20th century.
Registration opens and books will be available in the Kentucky Room starting November 10th.
