ARTBEAT WEEK

Join On the Move Art Studio for this interesting art class. This program is part of Art Beat, a weeklong celebration of the arts in Lexington.

The adult class will focus on the Harlem Renaissance (1918–1937), a cultural movement celebrating Black identity, creativity, and intellectual achievement, particularly in Harlem, New York. Black artists played a pivotal role in shaping the visual representation of this era, using their work to express cultural pride, challenge stereotypes, and celebrate African heritage. 
Artists depicted the beauty and dignity of Black life and culture, countering negative portrayals in mainstream media. Their works often celebrated everyday life, African traditions, and the resilience of Black communities. 
We will focus on painting depictions of artwork from Archibald Motley, who captured the vibrancy of Black urban life in Harlem and Chicago through paintings like Nightlife, showcasing music, dance, and social interactions. Participants will then create a painting of their own work of art. Registration is required.

Feel the pulse of creativity by joining us at Lexington Public Library for a week-long celebration of artistic expression filled with workshops, demonstrations, and performances tailored to a wide range of age groups and interests. Each day we will celebrate a different art form, including written and spoken word, drama, dance, visual arts, and music.
